The beginning of another year is upon us and I have had time to reflect on my past year. It has been difficult but so rewarding in so many ways. This Sunday I have the opportunity to introduce this year's Young Women theme for our church. Normally, I would be posting this on Sunday but for those of you who are doing the same thing across the world I am hoping this would be ever so helpful.
Arise and Shine Forth
|Avery Mailing Labels 18160|
I will be giving the girls a small flashlight with the theme wrapped around it. Arise and Shine Forth, the files are included. You can either use the AVERY 18160 or print on regular paper, cut and glue!
This is how the lesson will be presented:
- All the windows will be blacked out. I will have table and floor lamps placed around the room. All lights will be off.
- As the girls come into the room they will get a flashlight with a section of my lesson to read out loud. The sections are from different church sources that I have found on the internet. I will include the word format of my lesson below.
- As we begin opening exercises, prayer, song, & Young Women's theme, a light will be turned on. Still the only light in the room. As each section of the lesson is read and presented another light including the flashlights will be turned on and will remain on after they have read their section. The point is to show that one light will shine bright in a dark world but with many lights we can Arise and Shine Forth and be a new standard to the world.
- I will show the following video that I found on youtube.
Arise and Shine Forth
Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations. D&C 115
Teachings of Thomas S. Monson:
President Monson states: Although there have always been challenges in the world, many of those which you face are unique to this time. But you are some of our Heavenly Father’s strongest children, and He has saved you to come to the earth ‘for such a time as this’. With His help, you will have the courage to face whatever comes. Though the world may at times appear dark, you have the light of the gospel which will be as a beacon to guide your way.

Girls giving examples of how they think they can Arise and Shine forth
As the youth we want to make sure that arising and shining forth doesn’t mean you are responsible for huge, unobtainable things. We want you to know that it’s through simple and small acts of kindness and love that they can express who they are as children of God.”
Sister Dalton said realize you are not alone. “Be confident,” she said. “This is your moment to arise and shine and be a light to the nations.”
Throughout time and Eternity Prophets have counseled us to Arise and Shine forth:
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
3 Nephi 12:16: Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your father who is in heaven
..And our Modern Day Prophets:
President Ezra Taft Benson states: Beloved youth, you will have your trials and temptations through which you must pass, but there are great moments of eternity which lie ahead. You have our love and our confidence. We pray that you will be prepared for the reins of leadership. We say to you, ‘Arise and shine forth’ and be a light unto the world, a standard to others.”
President Dieter Uchtdorf states: The Lord will bless you as you follow His counsel and guidance given through prophets. Go forward and become the valiant men and women of Zion you were prepared to be. The Lord has a great work for each of you to do. “Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations”. He trusts you, and He calls and relies on you to stand taller and shine brighter in these challenging but wonderful days.
President Ezra Taft Benson: For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the Second Coming. Every previous gospel dispensation has drifted into apostasy, but ours will not. … God has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God. … Make no mistake about it—you are a marked generation. There has never been more expected of the faithful in such a short period of time as there is of us.”
The mutual theme—“Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations” (D&C 115:5)—comes from a revelation given through the Prophet Joseph Smith at Far West, Missouri, in 1838. It was addressed to the presiding officers of the Church at the time, who were Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and Hyrum Smith and the counselors that should be appointed at a later time. Lets read the revelation:
D&C 115:5: This shows that God’s teachings and revelations are timeless. What pertained to the newest members of the church in 1838 the same pertains to the youth ages 12 to 18 throughout the Church in 2012.
What a glorious responsibility it is to be shining examples—to share our testimonies of the Restoration by living gospel standards and serving others!
The Savior taught, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16).Christ is the perfect example. If we truly follow Him, we, too, will be “lights” to those around us.
The First Presidency has said, “We have great confidence in you. … We pray for each of you. … We pray that you will be worthy to carry on the responsibilities of building the kingdom of God and preparing the world for the Second Coming of the Savior” (For the Strength of Youth , 2–3).
We are grateful for valiant youth who show their love for the Savior by letting His light shine forth in their lives. As you follow the Lord and live the standards He has given us, you will experience joy and happiness. And the example you set will bless the world.
We love you. We pray for you. We bear testimony that the Lord loves you and needs you to help build His kingdom. You can be a light that dispels darkness, revealing by your example the path to celestial glory in the kingdom of God. “Arise and shine forth,” that the Spirit of the Lord may continue to bear witness of the Restoration of the gospel through you.
“It is a time to do what is right regardless of the consequences that might follow. It is a time to be found keeping the commandments. It is a season to reach out with kindness and love to those in distress and to those who are wandering in darkness and pain. It is a time to be considerate and good, decent and courteous toward one another in all of our relationships. In other words, to become more Christlike.” —President Gordon B. Hinckley, “This is the Work of the Master,” Ensign, May 1995, 71.
A Light to the World
How can you tell if you have a testimony of Jesus Christ and His restored gospel? Is it by the words you say? Is it by where you spend Sundays? Is it by the things you do?
One of the best measures of your testimony of Jesus Christ is how you treat others. When you love the Lord Jesus Christ and turn your heart to Him, you will automatically turn to those in need, especially those in need of coming to Christ.
The path you follow on earth may not always be easy. But you can be assured that the Lord has not sent you here to fail. You will succeed as you follow the prophet and stand strong. As your testimony grows in intensity and strength, you will be able to help friends and family strengthen their testimonies. It is time to arise and shine forth.
“We bear testimony that the Lord loves you and needs you to help build His kingdom,” the statement said. “You can be a light that dispels darkness, revealing by your example the path to celestial glory in the kingdom of God. ‘Arise and shine forth,’ that the Spirit of the Lord may continue to bear witness of the Restoration of the gospel through you.”
If you want to give a light to others, you have to glow yourself. President Thomas S. Monson
