Sweet Sundays: Placemat Scripture Case

INSPIRATIONAL SUNDAYS
Today, I am thrilled to be sharing a very simple tutorial.  It is for an adorable scripture case.  If you are like me at all, it is really hard to find a scripture case that is SUPER DUPER CUTE!  Us girls, we need CUTE, and let me tell you this bag is CUTE!

Are you ready for a 15 minute project that will have everyone asking, "Where did you get that case?"  ..And what about for fun Young Women's Activities, Super Saturdays, or baptisms??  Oh the POSSIBILITIES!

Are you ready for your supply list?
  1. Place mat
  2. Ribbon
  3. Sewing machine
  4. If you are really ambitious you could glue it with fabric clue or hand stitch.

I know you are probably shocked, yes a place mat.  Any kind of place mat will work, of course, the cuter, the better.  I found this one many years ago at Pottery Barn and paid around $7.00 for it.  Considering any scripture case I have found is at least $20.00, that is a steal.  If you want to do these for a church project, for Young Women, Relief Society, baptism gifts, or birthday gifts, you can find closeout place mats VERY inexpensively.

You will fold the place mat in half right sides together.  It will be inside out.  Run a narrow seam down each side, making sure you are back stitching.  It needs to hold HEAVY scriptures.
This part is easy but very hard to explain.  You will flatten the case, until the very bottom looks like a triangle and you will sew the bottom part of the rectangle.  {sorry this is a tough one to explain.  My hands are touching the seam you just sewed.  It is like you are pinching the bottom part of the place mat.
This is what the place mat looks like turned right side.
This is the effect of the pinched triangle corner.  It creates a box.
Next, you will measure out ribbon that matches.  It will need to hang down six inches from the top, so account for that.  Everyone's length will vary because of personal preference.  Will it be a shoulder back or hand bag, you decide, I prefer shoulder.  Cut and measure the exact same amount for the opposite side.
Pin it on with about six inches hanging down from the top.
You will sew up each side of the ribbon and across the top leaving the bottom unstitched, it will allow you to tie a knot.   Repeat on three additional sides.  NOTE:  Make sure you do not sew the top of the bag together when stitching.  Make sure it is pulled apart.
This is how the new scripture case will stand.  The ribbon will hang down.

It is LARGE enough for the largest scriptures available, the president's book, & a hymn book with room to spare.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
