Ikea Ektorp Couch Slip Cover Review & Tip

There are a lot of these IKEA Ektorp Slip covered couches out in blogging land!  In fact so many people have so many opinions about them I ended up PURCHASING one, against my better judgement and my HUSBANDS!

Could all of the review be TRUE?  A white couch with a husband, three children, a brown dog, & friends?  I mean Almost every person said the same thing, wash, hang to dry and a brand new couch?  OK, I took the plunge and this is what I discovered!

Let's start with my first discovery!
  1. This couch has a 100% cotton cover and every dust bunny, every hair, every piece of clothing shows the lint on this couch.  I was expecting dirty hand prints not lint.
  2. With that being said, a lint remover worked wonders.  After I spent about 30 seconds cleaning it off it looks good as new again.
Next Item of Business!
  1. Washing the SOFA.  I read the reviews of pulling the slip covers are a pain, a real workout..  I wanted to know what I had gotten myself into so out came the timer.
  2. I had the entire sofa stripped down to bare bones and in the washer in two minutes!  WHAT!  Craziness.  And after the washing & drying cycle I spent about 3-4 minutes putting everything back together so about 6 minutes total.  IT WAS SO EASY!
The washing cycle the BEST tip of the day!
  1. I washed the slip covers in cold water.  There are reports that they shrink, they are extremely wrinkly, & DON'T use the dryer, etc.   I have the SOLUTION for all of that!  This is where the best TIP of the day comes in!
  2. After the covers were washed, shake and place in dryer on low heat.  On my dryer it will stop on my desired dampness.  Not all dryers have this option, turn the heat as low as it will go and run it for about 15 minutes.  The cover should come out damp but not wet.
  3. Shake the cover out and PUT IT ON YOUR COUCH!  Yes, put the damp cover on your couch.  Straighten and pull as you go, make sure the bottom pleats are folded in nicely.
  4. Put the cushions back on and avoid sitting on the couch for a couple of hours.  They will dry wrinkle free and you will have a brand new couch.
My covers did not shrink because of the low temperatures that were used.

Keep the lint roller handy for all of those pesky little pieces of fuz and you will have an amazing experience with your WHITE EKTORP COUCH!

LOVIN it!

Love, Stacie

awesome thanks! I bought the love seat and chair last july and my now 3 year old LOVED getting in the living room after spending the day digging in my flower beds. And as often as I'm yelling at neighbor kids its NOT a play room they all insist on playing in there. Heaven forbid they play in the PLAYROOM. Nope, white couches are better.

Everything you said is absolutely true. I have had mine for about 5 years. The first white cover I bought I dried it the dryer full hot cycle and the zippers broke off. I bought a second one and I keep a little lint brush from the dollar stores or dollar bins. Because it is damp it makes it easier to stretch...I've gotten so good at this....

I'm about to take the plunge and get the white Ektorp! I feel a bit crazy, but I've decided to believe all your nice ladies in blogland who promise you can have a white couch and have kids, too! :) Thanks for this post and your tips are great! I'm so exited to get one now... I've wanted one for years!!!

So, with the husband, 3 kids, dog, etc. how often do you wash yours? I only have 2 small girls (2 and under), but am seriously considering buying this sofa for our new house. But I'm terrified I'll have to wash it *constantly*, something I just don't have time to do!

I just bought a used one, it's actually the white chair.
I took a huge chance because there are several stains, problem is they appear to be real deep stains, I just purchased some Oxi cleaan for spots and thought I would read the blogs to see if I'm doing the right thing first. Any suggestions?
The washing tips are good, thanks.

I am washing my white slipcovers for the first time today using Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Laundry Detergent & Borax. I have the loveseat chaise lounge combo and the chair and ottoman. I am starting small and washing the ottoman first. :) Thank you for the drying tip, I was already considering something similar and this sealed the deal.

I had the white Ektorps (2 of them). Even damp they were a real workout to put back on... Not fun doing it every few weeks! I bought the black covers a few months ago and haven't changed them yet.

I've had a red Ektorp for about two years. I knew the covers were washable but I thought it would be a pain in the butt to do it. Boy was I wrong.
I followed all the steps of this blog and now the couch looks new again! Yay!

I'm trying this this morning... since my pooch decided to get sick on the couch. Cushion covers are in the washer as I type this. I'll let you know how it goes!

So I'm back with an update... it worked!!!! It really worked! There was no shrinkage at all. It was very easy to put the slipcovers back on and yes the stain came out. I also washed the ottoman cover and it fits perfectly as well. Thank you so much for the tips!

Stacie,
Any particular detergent, or just what we use on our clothes?

We bought two of these couches seven years ago when our daughters were newborn and 3. The covers were a pain to get on, so I have been putting off cleaning them. They are both now a child ingrained shade of gray.

Does it take more than one load to do one couch in an average size washer?

Thanks,
Scott

I was lucky enough to get a 3 seater couch & big chair for free. My neighbor thought the set was no good because her cats had clawed up the white cover that was one it. I threw that cover away and purchased a white set and then dyed it to the color that I wanted. I also check Craigslist for old covers that people no longer want and treat them with a color remover & dye them to. I LOVE my IKEA EKTORP furniture.

I just bought a new cover today for $49.00, how is that even possible? I kept looking on eBay and they were were 89-100 for the couch.

Here is an extra tip... go to ikea on Thursdays and be kind to the staff! We just got back from the sacramento store and after speaking with a sales lady (and being kind after watching a lot of customers do the opposite) she couldn't find one of the sofas we were looking for, but later came and approached us and showed us the display couches that were just marked down. I got a linen one for 250 which btw had only been on the floor for a week or so, looks fantastic and normally runs 600. I'm so excited. We then went down to the as is section and we found the Vellinge Beige covers for 48 total. I basically got two couches for under 300.

This is definitely some great stuff. I'm about to try out this method to see if it works. I may even be interested in purchasing your Twitter guide if this method brings me some success.

Thanks for the advice, and keep up the good work!
